Charles Frederick Somers

Born August 11,1931 at Fort McMurray, AB. Died peacefully, surrounded by family, on February 20, 2017 in Lacombe, AB at the age of 85. Raised in the Fort McMurray area with his nine sisters, Charlie worked hard from a young age to help his father, a telegraph operator, provide for his dear family. He met his future wife, Sheila Tough, daughter of a gold prospector in the northern community of Goldfields. They were married for 25 years, and had five children. Charlie lived and worked in the northern AB & SK communities of Fort McMurray, Fort Chipewyan and Uranium City, owning a bus line and a general store before moving his family south to Calgary in 1967. He spent many more years working in the natural gas industry as a Native Affairs liaison with Nova Corporation until retirement. Charlie will be in the memory of many for his quiet strength, dedication to his family, his love of the outdoors and lifelong passion for photography. Charlie is survived by sisters, Germaine, Elsie, Barbara, Gladys (Tom) and Diane (Robert). He will be sadly missed by his five children, Sharon (Chris) Diamond, Debi (Shane) Budvarson, Chuck (Kate) Somers, David (Brenda) Somers, and Tracy (Gary) Somers-Brown; grandchildren, Chance, Krista, Charles, Alexander, Jesse, Keely, Oliver, Spencer, Tara, Jenna and Kerri; numerous nieces and nephews, and lifelong friend, Ken (Diane) Hill. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Leonie; sisters, Ruby Interman, Pauline Somers, Doris Mirkovich and Eileen Chapman; and his grandson, Dylan Somers.
