Arthur Bruce Oldford

On Monday, November 27th, Arthur Bruce Oldford was called to his final tee time in the sky.

Art was born on March 8th, 1943 in Red Deer, Alberta to Bruce and Anna Oldford. The oldest of 8 kids, he was predeceased by his parents, as well as brothers, Bobby, George and Dave. He will be remembered as a great big brother by surviving sisters, Barb (Don) Geigle, Carol (Chris) Gregory, and brothers, Tim (Lucy) Oldford and Pete (Shelly) Oldford.

Not overly interested in school, Art left his academic career behind in his teens and went to work as a farm hand in the Bentley area. This worked out well for him as he took a shine to the farmer’s daughter who lived up the road, and they were married not long after. The family moved to Lacombe in the late 1960s and Art still resided there at his passing.

Throughout his career, Art worked as a truck driver, at a meat packing plant, owned a meat market, started a trucking company with his friend Bob Snell, sold cars at Giltner’s, ran a car cleaning business, and then finished his working life as a salesman at Empire Auto Sales. He knew a lot of people in Lacombe, but wasn’t the best at remembering names and was known to call Elaine to play “Who is this Guy” where he would describe a prospective customer who had just stepped on the lot and she would try to provide their name.

Following his retirement, Art pursued some of his many hobbies including golf, watching his beloved Habs play hockey, feeding blue jays while he enjoyed his morning coffee on the deck, and texting family and friends. He loved to use his “clicker” to flip between watching golf, hockey and anything on the nature channel in a never-ending quest to avoid TV commercials. Art had a lot of fun, and found great joy at the golf course and during his afternoon “honk” with his buddies. Palm Breeze stock may have fallen on the news of Art’s passing.

A lifelong and diehard Habs fan, Art’s love for the Montreal Canadiens was second only to his love for his wife of 53 years, Elaine. He is also survived by two children, Doug (Renee) Oldford and Sherri O’Muir, who are sworn to carry on his Habs loving legacy. His five grandchildren, Spencer, Anna-Louise, Bridget, Belinda and Ethan will miss being snuck pre-dinner chocolates and candy when no one is looking.

A Memorial Service and celebration of Art’s life will be held at the Lacombe Memorial Centre (5214-50 Avenue, Lacombe) on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 10:00am. Memorial donations can be made to the Lacombe Health Trust, PO Box 5663, Lacombe, Alberta, T4L 1X3 or to the divot repair fund at the golf course. If you knew Art, remember him in your own way.
