Alice Scholing Obituary

Mrs. Alice Scholing (nee’ Buist) went to be with her Lord and Saviour to live for eternity in heaven on Sunday December 31, 2023 at Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 98.  Alice was born on August 12, 1925 in Oostwald, Groningen The Netherlands eldest child of Klaas & Bentje Buist.  Alice grew up on a dairy farm in Middlestum, Groningen where she milked cows by hand and walked to school at six years of age.  In school Alice would learn math, writing, cooking and sewing.  At 14 years of age Alice stayed home to help with the daily household tasks and farm chores.   When Alice was in her early twenties her mother got sick and she remained at home until her passing.  Alice honoured her mother’s request to take care of the rest of the children – her eight siblings, in her absence.

In 1956 at the age of 31, Alice immigrated to Canada via the Groete Beer (Great Bear) ship.  After nine days of travel across the Atlantic, the ship docked at Montreal, Quebec.  From there Alice boarded a train from Montreal to Calgary, where she would begin her new life.  Two brothers, Bob and Tom who immigrated earlier, were a huge support throughout her life.  Alice’s first job in Canada was being a nanny, after which she was a seamstress for a clothing store in Chinook Mall.

In April 1963, at the age of 37 Alice married her love Herman Scholing, and moved from Calgary to Sexsmith, and later Grande Prairie, AB.  They were blessed with five children during this time.  In 1974 they relocated to Lacombe due to a strong desire to give their children a Christian education.  The family lived in town for two years and then moved to the farm just north of Lacombe.  Alice was a homemaker, and worked hard supporting her husband growing vegetables for Farmer’s Markets.  Raising her family brought much joy to Alice.  Work was hard and money was scarce.  Alice faced life’s challenges with dignity and strength.  She was not a complainer.  Her faith was the essence of who she was.

In 1996 Herman & Alice moved from the farm to their home in English Estates where they enjoyed retirement years.  This included travel to various destinations, many times with their siblings and family.  Alice enjoyed flowers, gardening, and giving back, volunteering at Bibles for Missions, cutting rags.  She shared what she had and was considerate of the less fortunate.

Alice’s greatest blessing was to enjoy her grandchildren and great grandchildren and be involved in their lives.  She took the time to acknowledge each one and cared deeply about their life.  She prayed daily for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

In 2019 Alice moved to the Lacombe Senior’s Lodge where she would live until her passing.  She loved the Lodge immensely, great friends, food, care and many games of rummi.

Alice’s strong Christian faith guided her throughout her life.  She lived her life of character by the fruits of the spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.  Her biggest desire is for all that come after her to accept Christ and the hope he brings.  As children we are grateful for Mom’s long life and sharp mind right to the end.

Alice is survived by her five Children - Betty (Gord) Gray, Trent (Maddy) Scholing, Chelsey & (Jon) van Dam Anita (Roger) Swier, Aaron & (Sarah) Swier, Ryan Swier, Kayla Swier & (Jaden), Judy (Art) Hazelhoff, Nathan Hazelhoff, Carter Hazelhoff, Herman (Betty) Scholing, Kendra & (Bennett) Bayes, Megan & (Paul) DenOudsten, Kyle Scholing & (Cara), Alen Scholing & (Laura) Stephanie & (Dan) Logie, Karissa & (Paul) Waisman, Jadyn Scholing, Zachary Scholing  and 20 Great-Grandchildren.
