Betty Ball Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Rosalie Elizabeth "Betty" Ball of Lacombe announce her passing on Good Friday, March 29, 2024 at the age of 91.

Betty was born on March 24, 1933, the middle child of Edward and Agnes Logan.  She grew up in and around the Rimbey/Lacombe area, and at the age of sixteen came to work as a cook for the threshing crew at the Ball farm and stayed as a household helper for Mrs. Ball and her two sons, Harold and Ernest. After two years, Betty and Ernest were married on July 26, 1951, and Betty stayed at the farm east of Blackfalds until 2018. She was predeceased by her husband Ernest in 2006 after 55 years of marriage.

She was also predeceased by her parents, Edward and Agnes Logan, and siblings Charlie Logan, Alan Logan, and Edwina Sprecher, but is survived by one sister, Pat Harned of Kelowna, B.C.

Betty’s greatest joy, and sense of accomplishment in her life, was her children.  Between August, 1955 and May, 1965, seven children were born.  That’s seven children in less than 10 years! She leaves behind to mourn her passing three sons and four daughters, and their spouses; Charlie (Janet) Ball of Trochu, Elaine (Kerry) Bloomer of Warburg, Brenda (Terry) Walker of Clive, Shaz Ball (Michael Rush) of Kelowna, Rod (Dixie) Ball of Blackfalds, Darrell (Shelly) Ball of Red Deer, and Angy (Pat) Spiller of Innisfail.

To Betty’s great joy, that family grew exponentially to include 36 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren.  Add in spouses and that numbers close to 150.  Whether you were born into the family, married, came as stepchildren, by adoption, or some other type of family, Betty loved them all equally and unconditionally. Some of the fondest memories will be the little ones singing “Jesus Loves Me” with her, even during the last week of her life in the hospital.

One thing all the family (and many in the community) remember Betty for are her butter tarts.  No one can make them the way she did, I suspect some of that is the homemade crust with lard, and the farm cream, but the most important ingredient we have never been able to duplicate is the love that went into every one of them.

Betty moved into Royal Oak Village in Lacombe in 2018.  She struggled with Diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease for many years. We will miss her dearly but we believe that she is in the loving arms of God, and has everlasting peace.

A Celebration of Betty's Life will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andew's United Church, 5226 51 Ave, Lacombe.
