Charles Nolan Obituary

Charles Edward Nolan

May 28, 1932 - October 20, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Charles Edward Nolan announce his unexpected passing at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre, Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the age of 89.  Charles passed peacefully with his family at his side.

Charles was born May 28, 1932, to William and Helen Nolan in Lethbridge, Alberta. The middle child of 3 brothers.

Charlie started school at the Battersea School, then went to Iron Springs.  In 1944 the family moved to the area of Poplar Ridge outside of Red Deer where he finished off schooling at the Crossroads School.

On January 25, 1958, Charles married the love of his life Myrna Gusek at the Gaetz United Church in Red Deer.

Charlie and Myrna spent seven years travelling from one gravel pit to the next, as Charlie was a foreman of Hopkins Construction Company and was a partner with his two brothers in Nolan Brothers Trucking,  operating gravel trucks.  During this time their first daughter Charlotte was born in 1959, then the arrival of second daughter Kristen in 1964, followed by son Tom in 1965.  The family moved into their new home in Lacombe in 1965.  A year later Charlie joined his brother Glen and Tony Hopkins in forming a life long partnership of Hopkins Construction Lacombe Ltd.  Charlie could run, fix and design any piece of equipment for the company.

Throughout the years the family enjoyed spending summers travelling from one gravel pit to another.   When the kids were grown Charlie and Myrna were able to enjoyed some memorable vacations with family and friends.  Charlie was fortunate to visit Ireland and celebrate his 79th birthday in an authentic Irish pub with Turkey Dinner.  Charlie and Myrna also visited Taiwan for his grandsons wedding and attended the MAC Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana that son Tom was competing in.  Another very proud day for Charlie!

When retirement came Charlie and Myrna spent summers farming at Drayton Valley and winters at their beloved lot in Yuma, Az and welcomed friends and family.

Charlie is survived by his loving wife Myrna (Gusek) Nolan, daughter Charlotte Nelson (Scott), daughter Kristen Vig (Mike), son Tom Nolan (Marilyn), grandchildren Ryan Nelson (Kelsey), Blair Nelson (Heather), Paul Vig (Ping), Amber Vig (Adam H.), Katelynn Allaby (Brandon), Austin Nolan (Marissa) and Thomas Nolan as well as 10 great-grandchildren.  Brother Albert & June Nolan, brothers and sisters-in-law of the Gusek family, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and an abundance of friends.

Charles was predeceased by his parents William and Helen Nolan, his youngest brother Glen and sister-in-law Beverly Nolan.
