With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Charles George Budd on March 28, 2024 at the age of 94. While we mourn his loss, we also take joy in celebrating the remarkable legacy he leaves behind. Born April 4, 1929, on a farm near Magnet, Manitoba, Charlie grew up in Saskatchewan as one of eight children in a hard-working family of faith.
Charlie married the love of his life, Freda Schierman, in Calgary, Alberta, in 1952. Together, they raised three children in Brooks, Alberta, Douglas, Janice, and Nancy, and opened their home to numerous foster children including Joyce, Harry, and Shirley. Charlie owned and operated a gas and service station in Brooks, Alberta, before moving the business to Lacombe, Alberta in 1971.
Charlie found joy in spending time with family and friends, while dedicating himself to his community. As Mayor of Lacombe, a Town Councilor, an employee of the County of Lacombe, and president of the Kozy Korner he worked to build a stronger community. He was also active member of the Rotary Club, Lacombe Flying club, and a Men's quartet(Joyful Sound), and was known for singing and playing guitar in the local senior homes (Sing-a-long with Charlie). Charlie had a deep appreciation for culture, playing a key role in the twinning of Lacombe with Rikubetsu, Japan. He cherished the relationships he built with the Japanese people, nurturing a bond that reflected his love for cultural exchange and connection.
His friendships grew deeper through his love for tennis, golf, curling, hunting, fishing, and camping often traveling to-and-fro on his motorcycle. An avid pilot, Charlie found joy in taking to the skies, traveling all over North America, never missing an opportunity to go on an adventure. Charlie kept his mind sharp through cribbage games and crossword puzzles, and he always had his nose in a book. Charlie’s faith was an essential part of his life. He lived by the values of generosity, humility, honesty, and service, which guided him in both his personal and professional endeavors. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, and unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his faith.
Charlie follows his beloved wife, Freda, who passed away in 2015. He is survived by his son Douglas (Sandy) of Calgary, his daughters Janice of Grande Prairie, and Nancy (Mika) of Haleiwa, Hawaii; seven grandchildren, Alan Schell , Darren Salomons (Michelle), Colin Salomons (Ashleigh), Carlie Salomons, Chenoa Bishop(Jeremy), Alexa Budd and Llewis Budd, as well as 10 great grandchildren, Tyler, Teri Lynn, Caleb, Marcus, Claire-Marie, Tyson, Owen, Jude, Isla, Ivie, and Lily; 3 foster children, Joyce (Riley) Stotts, Shirley (Ray) Tessemaker-Jewel, and Harry Schickler, and their children and grandchildren; and a number of Sisters, Brothers, Nephews and Nieces.
A Funeral Service for Charlie will be held at Wilson's Funeral Chapel, 6120 Highway 2A, Lacombe, Alberta on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.
