Daniel 'Dan' Edward Land Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of Daniel Edward Land’s passing. Dan, who was living in Edmonton but originally from Lacombe, died on June 23 at the age of 58.
Born in Edmonton on October 13, 1967, Dan lived with a ferocious energy that felt like bottled lightning. Bright, restless and creative, Dan’s intensity was beautiful and challenging. From stacking up sports awards, to building epic forts and communicating in only Morse code, to collecting every possible Cadet (Scouting) badge, to buying and renting out every Hardy Boy book ever published as his first 'business' venture, Dan lived life at full throttle from childhood on.
That passion and laser focus led Dan to develop a series of successful businesses until, in his 30s, mental-health and addiction challenges turned his life in a more painful and complicated direction. But those challenges never erased the person we knew and loved. Beneath the occasional chaos, Dan remained energetic, inventive, funny, determined, compassionate, and full of ideas. His restless spirit often found peace while camping and fishing in his beloved Rocky Mountain foothills.
One of the great gifts of Dan’s final years, as he battled cancer, was the healing he found with his family. Not every wound was repaired, nor every relationship restored. But in the last remarkable chapter of his life, he found the precious miracle of reconciliation with many family members. Thanks be to God for this gift of healing amid cancer’s relentless toll.
Dan is survived by his children Stefan, Arielle, Kayla, and Josiah, and their partners and children.
Dan was predeceased by his father Walter and is also survived by: his mother Ella Plantinga Land; siblings Lorraine (John Bird), Phil (Tina), Wilner, and Lenic; and nephews Matthew, Thomas and Peter Bird, Cheyenne, Branden, Hailey and Asher Land.
We are grateful to his best friend, Geniene Elder, who was by his side for the past 11 years and an exceptional friend until the very end.
A funeral service celebrating Dan's life will be held on Saturday, July 11 at 2 pm at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, 5704 51 Ave, Lacombe.
