Davie Barnes Obituary

Davie (Dave) Wilkinson Barnes passed away suddenly on January 6, 2019 at his home in Lacombe, Alberta.  Davie was born on January 9th, 1924 at the Royal Alexandria Hospital in Edmonton, a son to Ruth Barnes (nee Shaw) and John Alexander (Jack) Barnes.  He is survived by daughters Linda (Robert) Pack, Bonnie Blenkinsop, and Melody (Dan) Pharand and 10 grandchildren: Susan Anderson, Neil Pack, Amanda McLeod, Davie (Christeana) Pack, Levon (Breanne) Blenkinsop, Luke Blenkinsop, Tannis (John) Crawford, Lindsay Duffield, Carl Rylander and Jamie Rylander, and 11 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.  Davie was predeceased by by his beloved wife Vera (O’Hagan), his son Robert David, his brother, John Victor and sisters Katie and Caroline Ethel Alberta.

Dave was raised by a pioneer family on a farm in the Thorhild area. He joined the army in 1944. On his release, Dave returned to the family farm, purchasing his own farm in the Thorhild area shortly after.  He married Vera, the love of his life, on October 29, 1948. To subsidize the farm income, Dave went to work in the oil fields in 1950. He began farming full time in 1957. Davie was a charter member and first president of the Thorhild Legion. He served as President and Secretary of the Thorhild Farmer's Union. He served as Secretary for the Alberta Rural Electrification Association, and became a Director, in which position he served the ABNT REA for 26 years.  In 1969 Davie was elected as a delegate for the Alberta Wheat Pool for the surrounding communities and remained in this position for several years. He was elected as County Councilor and as a School Trustee in 1980 and continued to be re-elected until he sold the farm in 1990 and relocated to Westlock, Alberta. Dave and Vera were active with the Reform Party of Canada. In 2003, Davie was Awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for outstanding service to his community.  

 A Celebration of Davie's Life will be held at the Lacombe Legion, on July 13th at 2:00 P.M.
