Dixie Lee Irene Martin Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Dixie Lee Irene (Durant) Martin. After spending her last days in the arms of her daughters, she passed away peacefully on May 1, 2023 at the age of 75.

Dixie is survived by her daughters Rexelle (Robert), Erin (Jeff) and Blayne (Kevin), step-daughters Susan (Tim) and Donna (Darcy),  and her grandchildren Robyn, Rees, Ruby, Shelby, Morgan, Falon, Blake, Payton, Tucker, Austin, Chad, Kali, Tessa, Brenn and her brother-in-law Ross Temple, and special nieces and nephews.

Dixie is pre-deceased by her loving husband, Garry, her parents, Grace and Garth Durant, step-father Fred McMullen, her brother Don Durant, her sisters, Beverly Smith and Joy Temple, brother-in-law Earl Smith

Dixie was born in Stettler, Alberta. She was raised in the nearby rural community of Botha. She graduated from high school in Stettler and attended the Royal Alexandra Hospital of Nursing in Edmonton where she became a registered nurse in 1968. She moved to Lacombe to begin her dedicated career at the Lacombe Hospital and met the love of her life. She and Garry were married in 1974 and raised their family in Lacombe.

Dixie was an extraordinary nurse. She was strong, determined, and compassionate, focused on family centered care. She leaves a legacy in her training and mentoring of the nurses whom she took under her wing. She consistently role modeled how to be the best one could be while getting the hard work done. She touched so many lives throughout her fulfilling career, always dedicated to the highest standards.

Dixie's great love with her husband created a large and adoring family. She thrived on spending time with her daughters and grandchildren. It was important to her to keep up to date on everyone's adventures and we always knew how proud she was of each of us.

Dixie and Garry's unwavering commitment to each other was inspiring beyond belief. It made everyone who was a part of their lives search for that kind of love for themselves. They had a fun, adventure filled life together full of laughter for 37 years. They enjoyed camping, rodeos, music events and road trips. We are heartbroken to lose our mother but are reassured knowing she is in Dad's arms again.

The family invites friends and guests to a come & go Memorial Tea on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Wilson's Funeral Chapel (6120 Hwy 2A Lacombe).
