It is with heavy hearts we bid farewell to a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, neighbour and friend. Gord touched the lives of many in his 84 years with us. Generous and encouraging, always with a smile, he made the best of every day.
He believed in working hard. Early jobs included working with his father for a gas company digging ditches, guiding horse packing trips in the mountains, followed by a job at the post office, while farming parttime and raising a family. He achieved his lifetime dream of farming full time in 1974. They moved to the farm near Bluffton where he lived for the next 48 years. There were some difficult years, but they always found a way to get by. He was active in rodeo, hockey, gymkhana, and community groups. You could always count on him to lend a helping hand, no matter the time or the task. Gord made friends with everyone and was always interested in hearing their stories, he never forgot names or faces and accepted people for who they were. Animals, especially horses and dogs, held a special place in his life. In his later years he loved woodworking and generously made many treasured items for family and friends.
Above all else, Gord valued family. We always knew he was there for us. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Pat. Four children: Ann (Mitch) Hettler, Susan (Dale) Wedlund, Lorraine Spreadbury (Wayne Pidsadowski), Will (Carey) Spreadbury. Ten grandchildren: Nicole (Ryan) Fauria, Jenna Hettler, Allison (Anthony) Goodwin, Bobbi Wedlund (Wade Kelly), Kelsey Wedlund (Cody Huber), Travis Wedlund, Tyson Pidsadowski (Rosalyn Fassnacht), Jayden Pidsadowski, Jordan Spreadbury and Kylie Spreadbury. Eleven great grandchildren: Emerson, Easton, Liam, Rowan, Nixon, Keely, Ashlyn, Molly, Ava, Jax and Luka. Also remembered by his brothers Larry Spreadbury and Bob Spreadbury, his sister Joan (Gordon) Moore, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many close friends he considered to be family. Gord was predeceased by his parents Mary and Charlie Spreadbury and grandson Trevor Wedlund.
We are grateful for the care he received in the last months of his life at Rimbey Long Term Care Center and thank all staff for their kindness. Special thanks to Dr. Lisa Boere for her care, compassion, and expertise.
A celebration of Gord’s life will be held on September 16 at 3:00 pm with a short service and open house, outdoors, at the farm he loved, located at the Spreadbury Farm, located 12 km west of Rimbey on Highway 53 to Range road 40. 6.5 km North to TWP Rd 432. Turn right 1st farm on the left.
