Ian William (Bill) Guthrie

October 21, 1944 - December 31, 2020

It is with great sadness the family wishes to announce that Ian William (Bill) Guthrie of Lacombe passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with Cancer at the Lacombe Hospital on December 31, 2020 at the age of 76.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Carol, sons Sean, Duane (Tracy), Brad (Erin), Clay (Sacha), daughter Heidi, Grandchildren Dottie, Zachary, Jahden, Sairis, Tyrell, Charles, Cameron, Dominic, Emily, Maverick and Jenna, and many nieces, nephews, and numerous extended family members.

Bill was a long time and active member of the Central Alberta Amateur Radio Club (CAARC). He was a fixture at club picnics, always had lots to sell at any of the flea markets (but came home with just as much as he sold!), and could be found assisting on the air during various natural disasters including the Pine Lake tornado. Bill (VE6OLD) was a past president and one of the founding members of the Southern Alberta Repeater Association (SARA), and his voice could often be heard over the air while driving between jobs when he was working. Bill was self-taught, working in various roles pertaining to electronic sales and service, retiring from his IT role with AFSC in 2012. However, after “retiring”, he kept busy as a campground caretaker. Bill had a love of camping, taking many road trips and exploring new campgrounds with his family over the years. It was only fitting that his final job was spent alongside Carol managing and caring for the Lacombe Michener Campground. 

As per Bill’s wishes, a small private memorial will be held with immediate family only.
