Jacob Prins Obituary

Jacob Prins was born on July 18, 1926 in Andijk, the Netherlands as the 12th of 13 children. He was a man of deep faith and went to be with his Lord on January 7, 2024 at 97 years of age. Following a celebration of 70 years of marriage in the hospital with family, flowers and cake, he entered an eternal celebration just hours later. His early years were spent helping in the family enterprise which involved producing potatoes, vegetables, garden seeds, and tulip and gladiola bulbs. He was 13 when World War II broke out. The Netherlands was invaded and life became difficult and dangerous for the next five years. In 1946 he was conscripted into the Dutch army and was sent to Indonesia for two and a half years. Among many changes upon his return to the Netherlands, the little girl (Akke Nijdam) who was a cousin of good friends of his, had blossomed into someone he now took special notice of. On January 7, 1954 they were married. Six weeks after their marriage, Jacob and Agnes Prins immigrated to Canada on the Rijndam. He was a farm labourer in the Lacombe and Alix areas for 9 years. In 1962 he moved from Alix to the Lacombe area and worked with his brother Piet for one year; and in 1963 he bought the farm in the Iowalta district. He started off with mixed farming, hogs and dairy but eventually it became a dairy farm. At the age of 57 he retired from farming but occasionally continued to help on the farm as well as immensely enjoying their travel adventures. Destinations included a trip to Israel, an Alaskan cruise, Panama cruise, solar eclipse cruise, trips to Holland, not to mention annual Prins picnics and countless trips through the majestic Rockies to visit children and grandchildren.

Jacob was active in the life of Bethel CRC church, supported Christian education, enjoyed the community neighbors of the Iowalta district and visited regularly with his brothers and their families where they loved to tell stories and laugh. He was empathetic to those less fortunate, often visiting those in need and showing generosity. Jacob was amazed at God’s creation, especially wild plants and birds. He was an avid chess player, took an interest in astronomy and loved to read. He was pretty hard to stump when it came to Bible knowledge, history and geography. His genuine interest in others, quick wit and ready smile helped create many good relationships. Jacob loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, never forgetting a name or birthday. Above all, he expressed his love for the Lord and was so thankful for His blessings. “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. I Thessalonians 5:16-18

He is survived by his loving wife, Agnes; children Peter (Gerry), Doreen (Piet), Dick (Anne); grandchildren Allan (Kristina), Michael (Kim), Krista, Heidi (Dereck), Rachel (Paul), Matthew (Anna-Lise), Steven (Alyssa), Rebecca (Brett), Jessica (Kevin) and great-grandchildren Emmit, Rhys, Ainsley, Willa, Graycee, Rizyna, Alivia, Niklas, Jakob, Willem, Madeleine, Reuben, Anneke, Nel, Grace.
