John "Al" Macpherson Obituary

JOHN “AL” ALLAN MACPHERSON

1941 - 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of “Al” on October 25th after a thankfully short battle with a second round of cancer, surrounded by love and family.  Al was born on May 2, 1941, in Eston, Saskatchewan, eldest of four children.  He grew up on the family farm in Lacadena where he farmed until his retirement in 2020.  Al also worked and lived in Saskatoon and area in the insurance adjusting sector, aircraft insurance, earned his private pilots license and flew from his farm near Aberdeen to Lacadena.  He was involved in minor hockey which led him to scout, then director of player personnel and right-hand man for his friend Kelly McCrimmon and the Brandon Wheat Kings for thirty-six years.  With his hockey knowledge he scouted for various NHL teams over the years.

After retiring from a very full active life, Al moved to Lacombe to slow down.  With his partner of over thirty years, they enjoyed their RV trailer touring Alberta and settling the unit down at Pigeon Lake.  His life will be remembered and cherished by Melva, son Blair, son Darren and Heidi, grandson Brady (Brittney), grandson Riley, stepdaughter Tania (Jeff) and grandson Brayden, step grandsons Dom and Kash; his brother Robert “Bob” (Vonne) of Saskatoon; sister Elizabeth “Betty” (Mel) of Nelson, BC; as well as nieces and nephews.

Al was extremely humble, and life was never about his accomplishments but always so proud of his family.  He was not a talker but when he did it was always about the children and grandchildren.

Thank you for the care and compassion received at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre from the Doctors and staff.

If friends so desire memorial tributes may be made to the Lacombe Minor Hockey Association, P.O. Box 5180, Lacombe, Alberta T4L 1W9.
