Joyce Mary (Mackie) Jones

It is with deep sadness that our family announces the loss of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister, Joyce Jones.  After being surrounded by family during her final days, mom passed away peacefully at the Lacombe Hospital on April 25, 2023 at the age of 90 years old.

Mom is survived by her sister Bernice Beeson, and all nine children Gloria (Ken), Gordon, Robert (Gabe), Dave (Chris), Keith (Maria), Debbie (Roy), Sharlene (Darrin), Karen (Cindy), and Doug (Debbie).  Given her large family, Joyce is blessed with 15 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

Joyce is predeceased by her parents, her husband Tom Jones, sisters Jessie, Margaret, Linda, and brother Neil.  As well as two daughters in law Bonnie and Donna.

Joyce was born in Ninette, Manitoba, a very small community about an hour south of Brandon.  She and Tom were married in 1950 and soon moved to Brandon where Tom worked for the city.  Along with raising her children over the next 35 years, mom worked at Fairview Home starting in the laundry before completing her training and spending most of those years as a nurse’s aide to seniors.  Joyce’s family mainly remembers Joyce as a giver and provider.  Again, she raised a large family and working out of the home, yet there were always home cooked meals from scratch and the sewing machine was in regular use.   She never complained, always had a smile, and never missed one of her kid’s ball or hockey games.  She retired from Fairview in 1985 and in 1987 moved from Brandon to Alberta to be closer to her grandchildren.  For these last 35 years her joy in life has been spending time with her grandchildren.  While she lived in Lacombe, each year she would spend a couple months in BC and Manitoba to be close to other children and grandchildren.  The family soon started a tradition of gathering every 5 years for her birthday, although family weddings often determined this schedule!  These were Joyce’s favorite times, surrounded by her loving family and for mom, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and now great-great grandchildren were always the stars of the show!  

Special thanks to Joyce’s daughter Debbie and son-in-law Roy Michelau for providing mom a loving home and being her primary caregivers, particularly over this past 10 years.  Also, thanks to the Lacombe hospital staff for also caring for mom these last few months and particularly her final days.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Lacombe Pentecostal Church (40331 Range Road 27-1, Lacombe, AB T4L 0E3).  Interment will take place immediately after the service at the Lacombe Fairview Cemetery.   There will be a time of fellowship and refreshments at the church following the service.
