Kenneth "Ken" Emil Nikolai was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of everyone he met. He passed away unexpectedly on January 30, 2025, at the age of 78 at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre.
Born on July 30, 1946, in Edmonton, Alberta to Dora and Emil Nikolai, Ken spent his childhood on the family farm just outside Thorsby. He married his beloved wife Doris on February 12, 1971. The couple welcomed their first child Jason shortly thereafter—a joy that filled Ken's heart with love. Their family grew to include their cherished daughter Tanya in 1974.
Throughout his life, Ken applied himself diligently as a down-hole fisherman while also cherishing moments spent hunting and camping. Above all else, he treasured time with family and friends—his true passions.
Ken is reunited in spirit with his loving wife Doris; his parents Emil and Dora; sisters-in-law Joyce and Margaret; and brother-in-law Joe. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his children Jason (Tracy) and Tanya; grandchildren Jared (Brooke), Eric, Emily, Brianna, Cameron (fiancé Avery); as well as siblings Gladys, Marlene (Doug), Melvin (Elaine), along with many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly. Ken’s memory will forever remain alive in our hearts—a testament to a life lived fully with love for those around him.
Ken's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Valley View Manor, where Ken resided for approximately 3 ½ years. The dedication and compassion shown by the staff consistently went above and beyond, not only for Ken but also for his family.
Additionally, the family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the exceptional Home Care team working at the Valley View Manor for the outstanding support, compassion, and care they provided during their time working with him. Their commitment made a significant difference in Ken’s quality of life. Finally, we extend our gratitude to the caregivers at Rimbey Hospital & Care Centre, who showed kindness and support during Ken's final days.
Friends and family are warmly invited to a casual drop-in gathering for coffee and tea to celebrate and remember the life of Ken on Sunday, February 16, from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Join Ken's children and grandchildren at the Royal Canadian Legion, located at 5019 50 Street, Rimbey, AB. We look forward to sharing memories and honoring Ken together.
