Mary Schur Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing Mary Doreen Schur, 94, of Lacombe, Alberta, who passed away peacefully with family present on December 13, 2025, at the Ponoka Centennial Centre.

She was born on July 8, 1931, in Castor, Alberta, into a family of seven siblings with her parents Eleanor and Percy Anderson who resided in Halkirk, AB.

Mary lived a long and meaningful life, remembered for her warmth, resilience, and devotion to family. She touched the lives of many with her kindness and generosity, and her legacy will live on through those who knew her.

Married November 21,1952, to Orest Schur. Mary and Orest resided in Edmonton before moving to Lacombe, where they raised their family of 5 children.

Mary’s working life reflected her dedication and versatility. She was employed at the Royal Bank, Bank of Montreal, worked with Schlumberger, and operated her own business selling ice cream with a cart. Later, she served the community as a school bus driver in Lacombe for many years, continuing well past the age of 70, faithfully ensuring children arrived safely to and from school. She also contributed her expertise at the Lacombe Research Station as a professional and skilled taster, supporting agricultural research.

In the early years, Mary assisted alongside her husband in answering the Lacombe Police telephone and radio, which were in the family residence, a role that reflected her commitment to community service.

Mary belonged to several organizations, including the Kinette Club, K40 Club, and the Lacombe Dolphin Swim Club. She especially cherished her involvement as a member of the Lord Lascelles Chapter of the I.O.D.E. in Lacombe, where she held executive positions both locally and provincially. She contributed to many other organizations, clubs that the family was involved in.

She is survived by her five children: Joanne Ackerman (Lloyd), Barry Schur (Wendy), Rick Schur (Leanne, Carla+, Janet+), Lori-Rae Zak (Terry), and Murray Schur (Gail); six grandchildren: Ryan, Morgan (Ron), Andrew, Heather (Dom), Jordan (Samantha), and Annie-Leigh (Colby); eight great-grandchildren: Elizabella, Alexander, Owen, Zoey, Ivy, Carmen, Baker, and Crosby; sister Shirley MacDonald (Ken); sister-in-law Dorthy Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Orest Schur; grandson Brandon Schur; sister Joyce Leadlay; brothers Ed Anderson, Jack Anderson, Ken Anderson, and Stanley Anderson; great-niece Teckla Anderson; and nephew Kevin Leadlay.
