Obituary

BOTT, Max Kenneth

1934 - 2023

Max Kenneth Bott passed away on August 12, 2023 at Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 88. He was born November 30, 1934 in Red Deer to Fred and Keitha Bott and was the 9 th of 10 kids. He grew up on the family farm near Withrow, attending Shady Lane School for nine years and Full Gospel Bible Institute in Eston, Saskatchewan during the winter of 1955-1956. He grew up with a strong work ethic which served him very well in his life. He had an avid interest in agriculture and purchased his farm in 1956. Max met and fell in love with Muriel Phelps and they in were married in 1959. They had one son, Roger, born in 1968.  Max worked hard to provide for his family, and he took pride in everything he did whether it was crops, dairy, beef cattle, horses or painting many a neighbour’s home around the country. Max was a dedicated member of Withrow Gospel Mission, coached Little League and Men’s fastball, was an active member of Rocky
and Eckville Fish and Game, at times serving as President in Eckville. He also took his courses and became a Class “A” hunting guide in the west country. As hunting, fishing and outdoors, in general, were a big part of Max’s life he enjoyed countless trips with numerous friends and family over the years. He especially enjoyed working a trapline, whether it was out west, or setting mousetraps around home. And he loved controlling the coyote population around the country. After Muriel’s passing in 1993, Max was blessed to have a second life companion in Lucky VonHollen. He sold the farm to Roger and Bonita, and Max and Lucky were married in 1995. They enjoyed retirement with many years of camping and road trips. He cared for Lucky until her passing in 2017. Since then, Max spent a lot of time back on his farm with Roger, Bonita and Caleb. Max was blessed yet again, to find another special companion in Mary Fox. She has been
the bounce in his step and the twinkle in his eye, and a wonderful and faithful companion to Max until his passing. They spent as much time together as possible, faithfully attending Clearwater Cowboy Church, Sylvan Lake Gulls ball games, and as many of Caleb’s, and Roger and Bonita’s ball games as possible.  Max was always determined to stay active, and kept busy with growing spuds, picking raspberries, and chopping wood. He loved his campfires. A final highlight for Max was one last camping trip with Roger, Bonita and Caleb to Gap Lake in early July of this year.

Max will be forever loved and missed by his son, Roger, daughter-in-law, Bonita, grandson, Caleb, and special friend, Mary Fox. He is survived by his brother Eddie Bott, and sisters Myrtle Finkbeiner and Donna Pattison. He is predeceased by wives Muriel Bott and Lucky Bott, grand daughters Catie, Jana and Dara Bott, parents Fred and Keitha Bott, brothers Charlie, Ralph, Jim, Art, Dave, and sister Freda Gibson, brothers in law Delbert Phelps, Lenard Phelps, and sister in law Marie Bott.

A Celebration of Max’s life will be held at the First Christian Reformed Church, Rocky Mountain House, on August 22, 1:00 pm, followed by an interment at Leslieville Cemetery.
