Mercy Edward Obituary

Mercy Metilda Edward

1928 - 2022

Hailing from Pondicherry, a union territory town bounded by the southeastern Tamil Nadu state, Mercy Edward was born to Albana and Pastor Solomon Thomas on April 19th, 1928 and was the second child in a family of nine. Mercy was married to Vedamuthu Doriaswamy Edward on December 6th, 1943. Mercy had immeasurable faith in God. She literally walked by faith as she would fast and pray and present all matters to God before she even made any decisions. She treated people with love and respect whether in the market place or at the place of worship. People recognized her for her generosity and kindness. She loved the Lord and was obedient and kept the Sabbath from Friday evening to Saturday evening. She enjoyed cooking and loved to share her cooking with friends and family. Mercy enjoyed shopping and would shop for hours together. She was extremely stylish and loved to take care of her children. She loved yellow roses and was fond of wearing jasmine flowers. Mercy continued to model what it means to be a mother who can do it all. Her guiding light was always in service of her family. In the 70s, she made sure that the family weddings were taken care of, had her husband’s aged parents at home and still found creative ways to generate income for the family, including small scale activities like selling cows-milk, breeding German shepherds and other some microfinance opportunities. While in Trichy, she played a key role in leading the Dorcas society, a charity organization that provided basic necessities to underserved and marginalized families. Beyond this, she spent time supporting children through her ministries in Trichy and Bangalore.  Mercy Edward was a humble and devoted wife and servant of God and true to the gift of being a Proud Matriarch. She was full of sound advice and wisdom that she imparted to all whom she counseled and helped. She remained a strong pillar of devoutness and spent endless time in serving and praying for her family and friends. Her love and hospitality to the needy knew no bounds. After retirement, Mercy Edward and Pastor Edward moved to Canada in 1990 where they shared a beautiful life together and often visited their children. The couple shared such togetherness that even today, all stand in awe to salute!

Religion has always been a huge part of Mercy Edward’s life. When she knew of anyone experiencing a difficult moment, she tended to pray and read the scriptures without fail and offered her support for them. “Jesus save us,” was how she ended her prayers. She articulated the importance of strength and believing in oneself. All of Mercy Edward’s eight children were so treasured that they were extremely close to their mother. They shared an immense bond that they could freely confide in her seeking her fervent prayers. Even when her health was deteriorating, there was never a single-family function at any of the children’s home that did not begin with her prayer. Over the phone, her voice always chimed loud and clear with truthful perfection in everyone’s name. Truly, the family will miss her spiritual guidance for years to come. Mercy Edward leaves behind her siblings and their families, Dr. Helen Masilamani (late), Lily David (late) Dr. Pauline David, George Thomas, Dr. David Thomas (late), Dr. Thambiraj Thomas; and Rani David.
