Patrick Arnold Hayes was born in Rose Lynn, AB., on October 21, 1938 and was the third youngest of twelve siblings.  Patrick and his siblings were raised on their family ranch twenty miles south of Hanna, Alberta.  Patrick married Lynda Filby (Hayes) on March 17, 1969, and they had three children together, Shauna Lynn, Kimberly Doreen and Michael Leroy.

Our Dad passed away peacefully with his three children, Shauna, Kim and Mike at his bedside.  We love you Dad.

The following poem speaks to the heart of our Dad;

One More Day

Even with our progress

Some things stay the same.

Cattle still need brandin.

There are horses yet to tame.

Cowboys will always ride.

They’ll head, heel, and haze.

Making lasting memories,

These are their “good old days.”

As the lonesome sun is setting

On our last sky of blue,

We’ll think back on good times and friends

Who helped make dreams come true.

The only favor I would ask

Before I’m called away,

Is let me be a cowboy

Again for one more day.

Our Dad was our rock, our hero and our greatest supporter.  Our Dad was a good, kind and gentle man and we could never have asked for a more loving father.  Our Dad was a humble man toward his many accomplishments and talents.  Our Dad was the best at telling a good story and the best Math tutor a kid could ever ask for.  To us our Dad was our tough and strong cowboy and there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do.  Growing up our Dad taught us the value of hard work, to respect our elders, to be mindful of our manners and how to bake a homemade pie from scratch.  Growing up our Dad loved reading Longarm and Louis L’Amour western novels, often falling asleep every night in his recliner chair, glasses on, snoring and waiting for one of us kids to wake him up to tell him its bedtime.  Dad loved to watch Looney Tune cartoons and we would giggle when we heard Dad laughing at that crazy roadrunner.  Dad enjoyed tuning into his favorite shows, Gunsmoke, Beverly Hillbillies and a good John Wayne movie.  We have so many wonderful memories spent with our Dad and we will always remember and cherish each one of them.  We will forever miss our Dads wonderful hugs, his presence, his voice, the smell of Dads aftershave and the way he grinned and chuckled.  We love you Dad, this is not a goodbye, we will see each other again.

To Patrick’s grandchildren he was their “Papa”.  Papa Pat dearly loved his seven grandchildren and they adored their Papa.  To our Papa, we will always miss you, we will think of you often and remember the love we shared with you.

Papa’s face is a kind face,

And his handshake is firm and strong,

His arms are just perfect for hugging,

And his hearts always filled with song.

Papa’s voice is a calm voice,

And his laugh fills a room with delight,

He listens to all of our stories,

And he’s happy from morning till night.

Papa’s smile is a warm smile,

He’s caring, and gentle and wise,

And the love that we feel for Papa,

Is reflected in all of our eyes!

Our family would like to thank the Centennial Centre, Apollo House nurses and staff in Ponoka, Alberta for all the love and care they provided to our Dad.
