Peter Sluys
1927 - 2019
After a life of faithful service, Peter Sluys went home peacefully to be with our Lord on Friday morning November 8, 2019. He had been struggling with dementia the past few years while living at Emmanuel Home, then transferred to Aspen House in Mornville and most recently resided in Holyrood Extendicare in Edmonton.
Peter was born in Andijk, Noord-Holland in the Netherlands on May 17, 1927 to Pieter Sluys and Geertje Bosch. In 1939 they moved to the Dutch naval city Den Helder where they spent much of World War II. He later became involved in a Christian youth movement called “Jeugd en Evangelie” (youth and evangelism), and served in the Dutch Air Force from 1948 to 1950 as an airplane mechanic. Peter received sponsorship to immigrate to Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada in 1953, working as a car mechanic there. Then in 1955 Peter met Ruth Curtis onboard a ship crossing the Atlantic - the true "Love Boat"! They were married on February 3, 1956. Peter attended Calvin College and Seminary, graduating in 1962. He served 6 churches in Minnesota, Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia from 1962 to 1991, retiring in Nanaimo BC and later returning to Lacombe Alberta.
Peter was predeceased by his wife Ruth, his father and mother, his sister Aafje Sluijs and her husband Klaas Woort, his brother Bill Sluys and his wife Jean and one niece. He is survived by his children Tina Shrimer and her husband Fred from Coquitlam BC, Kathi Hellinga and her husband Hector from Neerlandia Alberta, Bertram Sluys and his wife Laura from Grand Rapids Michigan, Ted Sluys from Calgary Alberta, Alice Fox from Vancouver BC, and Liz Faulkner and her husband Blair who live in Edmonton Alberta, as well as nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and seven nephews and nieces.
A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, November 14th, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Fairview Cemetery in Lacombe.
