Premila Chauhan Obituary

TRIBUTE by Samantha Nakka

Premila Catherine EmmaJean Chauhan was born in Coimbatore, India on January 19, 1954. She was a daughter, a wife, a sister, a mother, an aunt, a grandmother, and most of all – a magnificent glowing light to all that were lucky enough to be in her presence.

She was born to Pastor V.D. Edward and Mercy (Thomas) Edward – the 5th of 9 children. Even from a young age, Premila was known to be social, outgoing and mesmerized all with her captivating beauty, charming nature and incomparable heart.

She attended Lowry Memorial High School and graduated from Spicer Memorial College in 1973 with a degree in Secretarial Sciences. She went on to work for the Northern Union Office of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and the South India Union Office of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, excelling with her immaculate attention to detail and aptitude for languages.

Premila was married to Timothy Chauhan on June 28, 1976 and had four beautiful children – Rahul, the late Georgina, Rohit and Rohan. They moved to snowy Alberta, Canada in 1995. Premila joined Red Deer Hospital in year as a Unit Secretary and worked there for 16 years. Her gentle amiability and commitment made a lasting and meaningful impression on staff throughout the hospital.

Premila was the most devoted and kindhearted person - her love and affection knew no bounds. She had a magnetizing presence that drew people to her. The lives she touched is unquantifiable and the impact she had is immeasurable. She loved wholeheartedly, unconditionally and always put others first. Above all, she was fiercely loyal and consistently went out of her way to care for her family and friends. She will be cherished for her trademark tenderness, contagious laugh and her unique ability to make every person feel like the most special person in the world.

Premila battled Stage 4 Lung Cancer for over five years. The journey was incredibly difficult but she remained resilient, brave and an inspiring warrior through it all. Time and time again, she displayed faith in action and never gave up. She will be missed by all that knew her, particularly her mom Mercy Edwards, children Rahul and Amanda Chauhan, Rohit Chauhan, Rohan and Alianhy Chauhan and her two grandsons Elijah Malakai Chauhan and Ezra Maika Chauhan, as well as her 7 siblings, 18 nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Premila was a rare jewel – radiant with an illuminating heart to match. She embodied authentic beauty and grace in all that she did and all that she was. Her impact transcends geographic boundaries and is felt by the countless relationships she cultivated throughout the world. Although, the unbearable pain of a world without Premila’s warmth is grieved by innumerable people, we all are better because of her – and, her legacy of love, strength and compassion will live on forever.

Premila Catherine Chauhan, loving mother and friend to all, passed away quietly on May 7, 2020 at her home in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada.

Premi as she was known to many, was beloved by all whose lives she touched. She was born January 19, 1954 to prominent Indian figures Pastor V.D. Edwards and his equally distinguished wife Mercy Edwards. The fifth of nine children, she quickly learned how to manage the myriad of personalities of her siblings, honing her affable personality. Her dear siblings are Evangeline Medavarapu, Bhasker Edwards, Daniel Edwards, Vatsala Samuel, Stella Nambi, Kumar Edwards and Ramola Goguen. Her brother Stanley sadly passed away.

Premi C. Edwards married Timothy Chauhan on June 28, 1976. The first of her soon to be doted on sons, Rahul was born July 29, 1977; followed by Rohit on April 30, 1982 and Rohan on January 13, 1985. Her darling daughter Georgina was born July 29, 1980, but passed tragically on March 29, 1981.

After leaving a meaningful mark in India for 41 years, Premi emigrated to Canada on April 15, 1995. Although an oft-described cold place, she quickly warmed the hearts of all those around. Her genuine and cheerful nature made her an equally popular figure in her new home. In Red Deer, with a steadfast hand, she raised her three sons into the successful individuals they are today.

Premi loved to travel and experience the joy of interacting with new and wonderful people. She was also one of the few, who would visit every milestone and life event of her family and friends.

As Cancer takes the best of us, it found Premi a little over 5 years ago. Although the initial diagnosis was dire, she found the spirit and resolve of a mountain, battling cancer fearlessly until the end.

Premi is survived by Timothy Chauhan; her three devoted children, Rahul Chauhan (Amanda); Rohit Chauhan and Rohan Chauhan (Alianhy); two cherished grandchildren Elijah Malakai and Ezra Maika; her strong mother Mercy Edwards; loving siblings Evangeline Medavarapu (Sudharshan), Bhasker Edwards (Helen), Daniel Edwards, Vatsala Samuel (Jayaseelan), Stella Nambi (Murali), Kumar Edwards (Madhuri) and Ramola Goguen (Paul); many adored nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and a host of other relatives and many, many friends.
