Raymond Albert Tschabold

It is with great sadness and greater love that the family of Raymond Albert Tschabold announces his passing at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre – Long Term Care on October 9, 2023 at the age of 90.  Raymond was born at Eatonia, Saskatchewan to Walter Tschabold and Elva Irene Herring on March 12, 1933.

The early years of Raymond’s life saw his family move numerous times due to the hard times created by the depression.  After leaving the Mantario, Saskatchewan area they were in Cold Lake, Sylvan Lake, and Bentley before settling on their own farm in 1937 northeast of Rimbey.  At an early age Raymond learned to trap from his father, and could be found fishing in the nearby Blindman River, which led to a lifelong passion.  Raymond acquired his first rifle at the age of 16 and with the help of a good neighbour, Homer Betts, learned to hunt, which led to another lifelong passion.  Raymond received most of his schooling at Monte Vista School.

Raymond met Alice Robinson at a Halloween costume dance in 1951 and they were married on Nov. 11, 1953 at the Rimbey United Church.  In 2022 they celebrated their 69th anniversary.  They bought their farm northeast of Rimbey in 1954 and started their farming life.  The existing log house and lean-to addition was home until a new house was built in 1960.  Son Frank was born in 1955 and daughter Yvonne in 1958.  Initially there was a variety of livestock on the farm, but sheep became the main farm income.  Lambing season and shearing time were busy times.  To supplement the farm income Raymond started doing janitor work in town in 1971 and cleaned many different stores and businesses over the years until he and Alice retired in 1993.

Besides all the hard work there was always time made for fishing, summer or winter, hunting, camping, curling, travelling, card games, dances, reunions, parties, celebrations, and playing the guitar.  In addition to entertaining at home or with family and friends, Raymond could often be seen with his cowboy hat and boots and guitar volunteering with a pick up band for events in town.  Raymond was devoted to his family and helped out in so many ways over the years, first with his kids, and then with his grandkids.  He loved the time spent entertaining and teasing first the grandkids, and then the great grandkids.  Once moving to town, volunteering replaced the paid work.  Raymond spent many hours volunteering his time, particularly at the hospital, the food bank, and the United Church.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal.  Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

Raymond will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by son Frank (Wilma); daughter Yvonne (Carl); granddaughters Ileana (Alan), Camille (Austin), Dancey (Paddy), and Nikki (Jason); grandson Jason (Megan); many great grandchildren; sister Dorothy; sisters-in law Donna and Issie, extended family, and dear friends.  Also survived by Alicia.

Raymond was predeceased by his wife Alice, his parents Walter and Elva, his brother Lawrence, and his grandson Jay.

A Celebration of Raymond’s Life will be held at Rimbey United Church on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 1:30 pm with Pastor Marco Williams-Ste-Marie officiating.  Interment of ashes to immediately follow the service at West Haven Cemetery, Rimbey.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Ellis for her excellent care of Raymond, and to thank the staff at both Valley View Manor and Rimbey Long Term that cared for Raymond.
