Robert 'Al' Chiswell Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Al Chiswell, at home in the company of
people who loved him on September 14, 2025, at the age of 94.
Al was born on August 7, 1931, in Lacombe, Alberta, to Archie and Pauline Chiswell and grew up
east of Lacombe. After graduating from Lacombe High School in 1950, Al pursued higher education
in Calgary, returning home to take over the family farm upon the untimely death of his father in 1951.
In 1957, he and Doris Dobbs embarked on a happy marriage that would last almost 68 years.
Together, they successfully raised cattle and crops (and two daughters) until moving into Lacombe
upon retirement in 1997. In 1988, he and Doris were awarded Lacombe Farm Family of the Year.
Al was an avid sports enthusiast, both as a participant and a spectator. As a young man, he was an
accomplished hockey player, and was a lifelong golfer and curler. He particularly enjoyed ski
vacations with his family at Fairmont. He was a passionate fan of the Edmonton Oilers from their
early WHL days, and was in the stands the night they won their first Stanley Cup.
One of Al and Doris’ passions was exploring the world, together, with family, and with friends.
They travelled overseas extensively and logged unfathomable miles throughout Canada and the US
in their trusty camper van. They enjoyed many cruises, particularly 50th and 60th wedding
anniversary excursions with their entire extended family.
Throughout his life, Al was an exemplary citizen of Lacombe, with decades of service through
Kinsmen and Rotary. He served on numerous boards and committees, worked for many causes
including community events and building projects, and volunteered countless hours to community and
political service. Al was well-known as a generous mentor, offering wisdom and guidance to multiple
generations.
Al will be remembered, sadly missed, and forever loved by his wife, Doris; daughters Alison (Richard)
and Coreen (Andy); and grandchildren Roland, Alastair (Sarah), Noah (Alicia), and Claire (Braonain).
The family thanks everyone who helped Dad through these last years, including Dr. Kathy Unger, the
Central Alberta Cancer Center, the AHS Home Care team, and all his Home Instead caregivers.
You are invited to a memorial open house in Al’s honour at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel on Saturday,
October 4, from 2:00-4:00 pm, with a tribute scheduled at 2:30.
