Dear Friends,
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear son, brother, dad, uncle, great uncle and grandpa, Robert “Bobby” Edwin John McDonald, who passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, with his sister, Frances, by his side. He was 74 years old. Frances was grateful to have been with him at the time and to know that he was peaceful and not in pain. There were some laughs, chatting about their antics as kids in their hometown of Taylor, B.C.
Bobby is survived by his mother, Florence McDonald; daughter, Kerry Weiland (nee McDonald) and son, Shawn McDonald; sisters, Mimi Rogers (nee McDonald), Frances O’Neill (nee McDonald); his grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He will be dearly missed by his longtime companion, Sherry Christenson and her children Jamie and Kevin. And of course, by his dear friends.
Bobby was born in Dawson Creek, B.C. to parents, Robert “Bob” and Florence McDonald. He grew up in Taylor, B.C. and moved to Calgary in 1967 where he started his career and raised his family.
He eventually settled in Sylvan Lake, Alberta with Sherry and family. He made many good friends and enjoyed golfing, playing hockey, playing cards and working in his garden.
He thoroughly enjoyed his career of choice, driving truck. We remember him learning to drive on dad’s 3-ton gravel truck when he was 10. He became a proud, professional driver and won many awards for his skills and safety ethic, receiving a milestone award for 2 million miles accident free.
Everyone loved it when he would visit. He gave us all some good laughs, especially at family golf tournaments.
He was proud of his Irish heritage and was fortunate to have travelled to Northern Ireland to meet many of our cousins and kept in contact with them through social media.
A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Lacombe Hospital & Care Centre for the genuine kindness and support given during his time in their care.
Bobby’s wish was to be buried in his hometown of Taylor B.C. A memorial service will be held there in the Spring of 2025. Details to be announced.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to their favorite charity in memory of Bob.
Thank you
