Wendy Hancock Obituary

Wendy Joan Hancock nee Hampson

1945 -2023

Passed away peacefully on December 17, 2023,  after a long battle with dementia.

Our mom was born on August 2nd, 1945 at the Lacombe Hospital to Theodore (Happy) and Mina Hampson (nee Helmer).  Being their only child, she was adored by her parents.  In 1964 Wendy married Bill Hancock. In May of 1965 they welcomed their son Lane. In March of 1971 they welcomed their daughter Lana. In September of 1971 Lane was hit by a drunk driver on his way home from his first day of grade one and as a result of this Lane was confined to a wheelchair, this was a very hard time for the family.  Mom became an avid advocate for Lane and all the struggles he had to endure.  She was his main caregiver with him also living at Michener Center in Red Deer.

Being an only child, she was very close with her grandparents, her aunts and uncles and her cousins.  And she made sure that we had a close relationship with Happy and Mina.

She easily made friends wherever she went, and she maintained those friendships throughout the years.

She was an integral part of the Lacome Action Group inception in Lacombe. She served on many boards during her lifetime and volunteered her time, one of the most heart wrenching volunteer position she had was for the Red Deer crisis center.

She worked for Home Care.

She was very involved with her high school reunions with regards to ‘finding’ her classmates and inviting them to the reunion.

Her second husband Ray and her shared a love for animals and they were known to rescue a few.

She loved to garden and at times she maintained 3 separate gardens and when she harvested them, she would share her bounty with many in Lacombe.

She was predeceased by her parents Happy and Mina, her first husband Bill, her second husband Ray, her brother-in-law Robert, her sister-in-law Shirley, and her cousin Hazel.

She is survived by her son Lane Hancock, her daughter Lana (Darren) Goings, her granddaughter Torie whom she was very close with, granddaughter Tiffanie and granddaughter Talesha, her great granddaughter Alayna (Ally), great grandson Kaleb and great grandson Flynn. Her cousins Maggie and Martha, her childhood friends Carol (they have been friends since they were 2yrs old), Lillian and Dorothy.  And many nieces and nephews.

Special thank you to all the staff at the Hamlets on Gas Lane Alley in Red Deer for their excellent care of our mom during the last 3 years of her life.

A Private Family Graveside Service was held.
