“Gordon (“Bunkey”) Stewart passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on November 30, 2023 at the age of 89 years. (“Bunkey” was the nickname given to Gordon as a child and comes from the book series Noddy and the Bunkey, where Bunkey is a thoroughly mischievous character.)
Gordon was born in Bentley where his parents had arrived from depression Saskatchewan. He lived his whole life in and around the Rimbey and Bentley area. Gordon worked as a Park Warden at Gull Lake until he became a water well inspector with Alberta Environment for 30 years until his welcomed early retirement. As a retiree Gordon was able to pursue full-time his true passion for horses. He spent his life around horses, starting as a child riding his pony to school in Leedale; jockeying at the Rimbey Derby; racing pony chuckwagon and chariots, including a trip to New Zealand where he drove Roman Chariots; racing thoroughbred chuckwagons with the WPCA for many years; and after retiring from chuckwagon racing training horses on the B racing circuit, team roping, cattle penning and trail rides.
Gordon is survived by his wife Gelaine and 4 sons Wesley, Dusten, Matthew and Kenneth; 7 grandchildren Crystal, Gwen, Aaron, Cody, Janine, Guy and Austin; and 5 great grandchildren Jayden, Parker, Nixon, Skylar and Zoey. He was predeceased by his parents Verona and Russell, his sisters Valerie and Caroline, and his granddaughter Jessica. He is survived by his brother Danny and sister Terry.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bentley Community Hall on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 1:30 pm - 4821 50 St, Bentley, AB T0C 0J0
