The last time I saw Auntie Joan was a year ago and she was the same wonderful, vibrant women as she always was. She always had a smile on her face. I would love to be there for you but I am unable however my thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Please take care of yourself and each other. I was so saddened this week to be given the news that Joan Schneider has passed away.
Joan was a Volunteer RCMP Victim Services Advocate for over 16 years serving the Grimshaw RCMP Detachment. Joan gave tirelessly to her community for over 16 years in that role with the RCMP - VSU. On the request of the RCMP she went to people in their darkest hour. She attended numerous sudden deaths, MVC fatalities and went to support victims of sometimes horrific crimes at the hospital and at the request of the police accompanied them through the criminal justice system attending court with them.
Joan sought out the opportunity to reach out to people in some of life’s most difficult times to offer her support, her kind words and a listening ear to support victims in their grief. She never hesitated to leave her bed when the call came sometimes at 2 or 3am in the morning from the RCMP. I spoke with Joan in the early hours one morning where she had just gotten home from being with a family at the hospital after they had lost their son and she was having a coffee and watching a mother robin feeding her chicks in the nest above her patio as the sun was coming up. She told me that her family and her blessings in life was what gave her the strength to do what she did.
Joan made so many relationships within the RCMP over the years. They trusted, respected and accepted her as one of their own. As one Grimshaw Cst. once said… “I don’t need to go on PROS to see who is related to this person in Grimshaw that I’m investigating, I just need to call Joan”. Joan was proud to work alongside the RCMP assisting victims of crime and tragedy.
She received an award for her service from RCMP – Victim Services Unit shortly before they moved to Rimbey.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to Joan’s family.
